When did you start your business and how did you come up with the idea?
Mother and Sun came about two and a half years ago when I was pregnant with my second child. I was looking for swimwear and a rashie so I could keep paddle boarding. I quickly discovered that maternity swimwear options were so limited and maternity rash vests didn’t exist! So I made my own. Then I got chatting with other women and realised how much of a pain point swimwear is when you’re becoming a mum. I decided that wasn’t good enough and that women deserved more, so I created Mother and Sun.

What does your daily life look like and where do you find the time to create?
As a mum, a part-time job and a business every day looks different. I usually find time to create and manage orders early in the morning, then move into mum and work mode. Then in the evenings, I focus back on the business. It’s crazy, but I love it.

What keeps you going when things are tough or you have a lack of motivation?
I remind myself why I started Mother and Sun in the first place. That passion keeps me going. I also take those moments as a sign that I’m doing too much and make some changes to slow down. I’m at my most creative that way.

What is the main thing you have learnt while running a small business or passion project?
I’ve learnt that the unpredictable will happen, and that’s just part of business. I’ve also learnt to remind myself that this is a long term project and so I have to be patient with myself.

What does each sale mean to you?
Wow, it means so much. To me, each sale is another mama who can now feel confident to wear swimmers, to go to the beach or swim in the pool and has the freedom to live life. Every sale also helps to support my family, and that’s really humbling.
