When did you start your business and how did you come up with the idea?
(Lauren Ellen) I started my label Lauren Ellen Handmade many years ago based on the fact that I love unique, one of a kind clothing & dislike seeing someone in the same dress as me. I have modified & adapted my brand over the years to suit the forever changing fashion styles but my love for the colour pink & florals has been the grounding of what makes my brand Cute, Girly & Feminine. I asked my mum from Shirl’s Designs who is a sewing genius to jump on the handmade train as she has made her own clothes for years as well and suggested we both start our own line but work together. That’s where the mother/daughter website That Handmade Dress was created.
What does your daily life look like and where do you find the time to create?
In the life of designer Lauren Ellen… coffee, coffee a little bit of tea and more coffee!!
My weekends & start of the week are devoted to my sewing room which is full of fabrics, buttons, too many pretties to count. Then at the end of the week, I work a part-time job during the day then come home to sew some more at night.
What keeps you going when things are tough or you have a lack of motivation?
My hot pink sewing machine and the fact I’m addicted to pretty fabrics and the need to cut them up.
What is the main thing you have learned while running a small business or passion project?
How important it is to support other small businesses as well. Running my own business has given me a whole other level to the meaning of stress and hard work & I support all small businesses as much as possible so their love for what they create can thrive and grow as well.
What does each sale mean to you?
It means a new family member is gained to our handmade family. My clients are treasured dearly to us and always visit for more unique items of clothing. It means we get to share our designs with people who truly treasure them and wear them with pride.
